Bonnie still won't eat it. I even tried (god forbid) fancy feast. won't touch it. I'll withhold food until she starts bugging me, then put out the canned and she'll just look at it then look at me and start bugging me again. She likes the sauces that stuff comes in, esp. in the avoderm chunky chicken, but she won't eat the actual chicken. i've tried mixing it into her dry, but she won't eat that either. any advice?

Re: still hates canned food
Mon, September 20, 2004 - 9:29 AMIt's beginning to sound like she doesn't like the texture of canned food, since she likes the sauce (which retains the taste) but won't eat the actual food. One method some people use to gradually convert cats to wet food is to slowly start wetting the kibble. This gets the cat used to the wet texture. As the kibble really soggy, they start mixing in small bits of canned food into the stuff, sometimes as little as 1/4 teaspoon a day, and increasing gradually from there. Don't leave soggy dry food out for more than a couple of hours, because it goes bad incredibly fast--it's like leaving wet bread out; it becomes a mold and bacteria fiesta.
Another way is using the bribe food method. Since she likes kibble a lot, you can try making kibble powder using a food processor or coffee grinder and thoroughly covering small bits of canned food with the stuff. Offer this when she's hungry and leave it down for a bit, so it sinks in that this is what she's getting. If she likes other bribe foods like parmesan cheese, nutritional yeast, canned fish, etc., mixing canned food with these bribes might work too. It's how I converted my cats (read: mostly Hitler) to raw. I used Call of the Wild powder, yeast, cheese, canned salmon, canned Wellness--anything to get them eating raw regularly. But since the two of them liked the taste and texture of wet food to begin with, half my battle was over.
Let me know if this helps..... -

Mon, September 20, 2004 - 9:32 AMohh ohhh
I've just been converting my kittens to wet food. Here's what I had to do.
They were drinking the 'formula' from the dish, so I started mixing some wet food in, then some wet food chunks. Now they all want the wet food!

Re: still hates canned food
Mon, September 20, 2004 - 9:31 AMI had a cat who also HATED canned food. I ended up just letting her eat dry. I'd guess, just get her the best possible kibble possible.
It turns out that this cat of mine (Spacey) was an outdoor cat. She would wander and wander (sometimes going away for 3 days at a time). Eating dry only saved her, all my other cats were (one by one) poisoned by someone feeding wet food. (We figured this out after losing 3 other cats over 2 years) She just wasn't interested in the wet food, so was saved! So, not always a bad thing! -

Re: still hates canned food
Wed, September 22, 2004 - 3:09 PMI have to say that this isnt uncommon (even her just wanting to "gravy" isnt uncommon. I would say that as long as she is healthy and remains that way, that just dry food with be ok. My best friends cats look at you like you are nuts, even if it tuna water that you are treating them too. Good luck though.
