I just switched to this food because it's manufactured locally in Massachusetts, and my cats absolutely ♥ LOVE ♥ it!
I'd rather pay a bit more, knowing they're getting fresh fine ingredients :)

my cats have been eating it for a couple years.. two days ago their vet said i should give them Hills c/d to acidify their urine.. any advice? (the vet did not check their pH before making this recommendation.)

Your vet most likely sells Hills so he's trying to sell it to you. Without doing a test he really can't make that recommendation. So don't listen to him. Honestly, I would say try finding a holistic vet.

I personally find Hills to be utter CRAP, even their Rx diets. A perfect example is what my mom's vet has her diabetic dog on. The Hills diet for diabetic dogs is mostly made out of Corn and paper. No joke. The first ingredient is corn. Now why they would give a diabetic dog a diet that consists of mostly carbs is beyond me. The second ingredient is "processed cellulose" which is paper. No way around that one. The third ingredient is peanut hulls, the fourth is chicken by-product (finally a meat source) and the fifth is chicken liver FLAVOR! CRAP CRAP CRAP. Wysong has a prescription diet for diabetic dogs that is almost all meat. Their listed ingredients are: Beef, beef liver, chicken, chicken liver, ground beef, chicken bone, fish oil coconut oil....

From a logical and medical standpoint, which one makes more sense?

I totally agree with you...Hil's sucks! Also how can a vet suggest anything like that when he hasn't done anything but look at your pet - is he psychic or something? I find that extremely irresponsible. Not to mention that I can't believe that any vet would suggest Hill's after all the pet food problems.

I've had my cats on Wellness for quite a while and they are healthier than ever!

"Now why they would give a diabetic dog a diet that consists of mostly carbs is beyond me."

The American Diabetes Association recommends human diabetics eat a whole heck of a lot more servings of carbs than my boyfriend with diabetes is willing to eat, when he has tried, it sends his blood glucose level through the roof. Maybe Hills is working from the same kind of nutritional "science".

But yeah, it is kind of - "Hey, there's this substance that your body can't handle right, so be sure to include it as the biggest portion of your daily food intake", isn't it?

You do know that all carbs are not the same, right?

There is a HUGE difference in complex carbs and simple carbs, and eating foods that are low on the glycemic index vs high on the glycemic index. A slice of white bread is a different creature from a metabolic standpoint than a slice of whole grain bread.

It sounds like you and your bf could benefit from doing some research on carbs, the glycemic index, and diets for diabetic persons. Humans need carbs, they are not meant to live on protein alone, and that includes diabetics.

Cats needs a primarily protein diet, but their GI tract is different from a human's or a dog's. The carbs a dog ingests should not be of the "junk" variety, and that applies to humans as well.

Let's not compare apples to watermelons (which, incidentally, are high on the glycemic index, haha).

p.s. My cats and I think Wellness is da bomb!

We are pretty satisfied with the amount of research we have already done. Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution is one that made a lot of sense to us - he's the fellow who has Type I diabetes, and became an M.D. after getting hold of a first generation portable b.g. tester (that was meant for use in ERs; he fibbed to the medical supply company in order to get it) because the AMA didn't want to listen to an engineer (his original profession) tell them that frequent testing, and the ability to keep b.g. levels down would help diabetics avoid and even reverse complications.

So true. Preaching to the choir on that one, sister. Wanna know what's funny? In another forum, after I admitted to having cut out refined starches and sugars, someone told me I must be on the Atkins diet, and went on for paragraphs about how bad that is. cuz ya know, it's unAmerican to miss our Daily Requirements of white flour and high fructose corn syrup. What? Eat whole grains and whole fruits? Ew, what kind of fad diet is that? /irony

"p.s. My cats and I think Wellness is da bomb!"

Oh yeah! It's actual food, not floor sweepings, like some kinds of pet food.
