Raw Food Diet for cats

Hi all,

I've been feeding my cats the raw meat diet from Feline Future for almost 9 years. As a lot of people are becoming aware of what actually goes into commercial pet food, there's increased interest in feeding a biologically-appropriate diet, and one that you know every ingredient that goes into it. The diet promoted by Feline Future has been around for over a decade, and is based on the work of Dr. Pottenger. My mother's been making this type of diet since the 70s, so it isn't something that someone thought up recently with no knowledge of the actual nutritional needs of cats.

I have two 15 year old cats and two who are turning 9 in a few months. They are all radiant with health, and all eat raw meat and bones, just like carnivores do.

I've blogged about the diet I feed my cats at labelleprovinceredux.wordpress.com/2007/03/21/homemade-pet-food/

Just getting the word out in case anyone's looking for a safe diet for their cats.

I have been feeding my kitty, Indie, a raw food diet almost since she found me, except for a short period last year where I was feeding her dry food. (I was talked into it by a vet.) Monday I took her to the vet because she wasn't acting herself. Well, she had bladder stones, poor baby. They are sending them off for analysis, but from what I've read they are most likely calcium oxalate. Does anyone have a source for a raw food recipe suitable to prevent formation of these types of stones?

When one of my cats got FUS, that's when I started feeding them a raw diet, and he has never had a problem with it since. The raw diet is the correct PH balance for cats, and it contains a lot of water, so what nature intended them to eat is best.

can this brand of raw food be offered cooked first?

i tried an offering of a raw food diet to my guy once, and he looked at me like i was from neptune ;-0

i would like to get him on something healthier, but i'm not sure he'll go straight to raw. he does like his gravy ;-/.

Just remember that if you cook it you'll have to add back all of the nutrients that heat processing destroys, like taurine. My Ms. Picky-Pants refused to eat anything but kibble, and then a couple weeks ago I got my meat grinder and grinded up an entire chicken, meat, bones, giblets and all (Northern Tools Meat Grinder). This is the first time I've ever gotten her to eat a non-kibble food all in one sitting.

Is it just pork that can transmit toxiplasmosis or all raw meat?
They say it's only dodgy for pregnant women to deal with cat faeces, but I know someone who was made permanently disabled by ot - and she wasn't pregnant....

        Just looking for the facts.

I believe it can occur in any meat. I've heard that you are exposed to it just by eating a medium rare steak. It's also one of those things that affects people differently. Some don't get sick at all, while some, like your friend, get seriously ill.

I wouldn't worry too much about contracting it from your cat unless you don't wash your hands after cleaning the litter box. You're much more likely to get it from a steak.

kewl...until i find the meat grinder....

taurine etc....i think a lot of these are in an organic kitty supplement (powder form) at the local market.

your cat prefer chicken over beef? (i'm leaving fish out just because finding totally boneless fillets isn't always easy; the chicken bones are one thing, but i'm not sure about feeding out the fish bones, the really fine ones.).

I think it's fine to feed some fish bones? I don't think they're as brittle as chicken/beef bones and don't splinter like either of those do when cooked. (Raw chicken neck bones are fine for cats because they're relatively soft and crumble rather than splinter.) It's been a long while since I read up on it, but I know I left the little fish bones in (only taking out the big ones) when I was home-cooking for Kaya, and she never had any problems.

That was less than clear, I realize now.

I don't remember everything about bones now.
What I do remember is that not all bones (chicken, beef, fish) are alike.
Some are ok to feed raw and some are ok to feed cooked. Look into it before you rule anything out, is what I'm saying.

            :)

I would refrain from feeding any cooked bones. Cooking, not only makes them more brittle (even fish bones, which are normally soft when raw), but it destroys important nutrients. The only reason I can see for not feeding them larger chicken bones is that they most likely won't be able to chew through them. My dogs eat raw chicken bones all the time with no issue.
